UFC 188: – Velasquez vs. Werdum

It’s fight week again with UFC 188 fast approaching and in MMA Exposed’s weekly article, we will look at our picks for the fights ahead.

Date: – Saturday 13th June 2015

Location: – Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City, Mexico.

We arrive UFC 188 with a very anticipated match up between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum. Let’s have a look at the fight odds and my picks that might be worth a flutter.

UFC 188: – Main Event

Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum

Well we have been waiting a little while for Cain to return to the Octagon. His last fight was October 2013 against JDS which we all remember as a total dismantlement of his opponent. What we have in Werdum is a reinvented fighter that looks like he has a new purpose. He has put 5 straight wins together since rejoining the UFC back in 2012. His striking is very much improved and we all know how dangerous he is on the ground. Both fighters seem to have the bit between their teeth coming into the fight, and both believe they have the win. Will ring rust play a part in the fight, or will Cain the cardio machine reigh supreme. I’m taking Cain in this one. Even though he’s been out of action a while I feel his pressure fighting will be too much for Werdum. TKO third round.

Co-Main Event

Gilbert Melendez vs. Eddie Alvarez

These two huge names in the lightweight division and shockingly have gone a combined 1-3 since both joining the UFC. Melendez dropping 2 title fights against Henderson and Pettis respectively as well as a win in an epic fight against Diego Sanchez. Alvarez lost his first UFC fight against a very good Cerrone last September and will be looking to solidify his claim that he belongs in the UFC.

This fight is going to be a war on the feet between two fighters that have a bit of a feud for many years. Both fighters have good hands, I just believe Melendez’ are better. I’m picking El Nino here by decision.

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Nate Marquardt

The fact that this fight is being fought at middleweight is the key here. We have to remember that Mexico City is 7500 ft above sea level and that will take a lot of of the gas tank. The fact that Gastelum wont be cutting a huge amount of weight for me is the key to the whole fight. Marquardt has lost 4 of his last 5, 2 of which were knockouts. Between the fight being at middleweight, Marquardt’s failing chin and the fact the Gastelum hits hard, I do not see a way for Marquardt to win this.

Yair Rodriguez vs. Charles Rosa

This is a very interesting fight on the main card with two up and coming fighters. Rodriguez won TUF: Latin America, while Rosa has looked very solid since joining the UFC. I feel that Rosa has the edge here, but needs to make it count since Rodriguez is on home turf and we’ve all seen crowds influence judges.
